Orion was about 4 months when he was rescued from a parking lot and brought to SBACC. He was malnourished, very underweight and had an infected mass in one ear. He was FIV+ and anemic but had a great appetite and within a month his weight increased by over 3 pounds. He was treated with antibiotics and the mass in his ear was removed but he started to spike high fevers. Despite all this he was a friendly, playful and affectionate kitten. Unfortunately his fevers continued to go up and down and the polyp in his ear returned and had to be removed again. He also developed a painful inflammation in his mouth and was put on steroids and pain medication. He turned out to have stomatitis and had all his teeth extracted in the hope that would cure his oral inflammation and alleviate his pain . His fevers finally abated for nearly 3 weeks and we thought he was finally out of the woods. But sadly, he started to spike high fevers again. Another consult and hospitalization revealed a very low platelet count and that he wasn’t producing red or white blood cells. A bone marrow biopsy and blood transfusions were a possible option but because of his compromised immune system due to him being FIV+, the odds of him surviving were very poor. As difficult as it was, we decided to let him cross the Rainbow Bridge. He was only 9 months old and loved by many.. We tried very hard but couldn’t save him.
