Oh sweet, resilient Niles. He is such a sweet soul, and once he breaks through his nervous shell he is just such a LOVE. The world is a very scary place for this 2 year old Chihuahua mix, but he is learning how to be brave. We are so proud of the quick progress he has made, which has been in big part thanks to his doggy friends! They have shown him that getting affection isn’t so scary, and Niles is now starting to ask for affection every chance he gets. We have even started to be able to give belly rubs! Niles is also starting to show an interest in toys.
He is still having trouble walking on leash, but it’s clear that is something he has just never done before. Niles loves running around the yard with his friends, and the walk to the yard is getting easier and easier for him. Short distances out front have been a new part of his routine. We know he’ll get there someday, and we will continue to let him work at his own pace.
When he goes home, Niles will need lots and lots of patience. Most likely he will need to go home with another pup, that can show him the ropes and help him thrive! He is a great dog, and we have loved getting to know the real him as he continues to settle into his own here at the shelter.
